Iowa City VA Medical Center

Women's Health Clinic

This is a comprehensive healthcare clinic for women veterans.  Services are designed and provided in a collaborative model of care by a multidisciplinary team.  The team includes a primary care physician, a psychiatrist, a therapist from the Psychology Service, and nursing staff; additional allied health providers, including social workers, are assigned on a case by case basis to address, for example, substance use issues and to provide assistance in the Compensation and Pension process.  The diversity of the treatment team ensures treatment will be provided in an interdisciplinary and comprehensive manner. A consistent team of providers, that includes input from the veteran, promotes the safe and compassionate atmosphere that is a prerequisite for trauma treatment and ensures a comprehensive assessment of the veteran’s needs.

In this setting, interns will develop an understanding of providing consultation and on-going collaborative care in an integrative and holistic manner.  Interns will function as a member of the multidisciplinary team and address a full range of presenting concerns from the female veteran population.  Presenting concerns include trauma related treatment, pain management, post-deployment adjustment, family concerns, and women’s health issues. The intern will understand the dynamics of complex trauma, and military sexual trauma in particular, and be able to apply a broad range of evidence-based treatment approaches.  Interns function as a primary provider of psychotherapeutic services.  Primary responsibility includes the evaluation and treatment of the emotional, cognitive, behavioral and interpersonal trauma sequelae and providing consultation and coordination of those aspects of care.  Modalities of treatment may include individual, couple/family, and group formats.  Additionally, interns may select opportunities for program development or evaluation of Clinic outcomes of the mental health aspects of care.
