Marriage and Family Therapy
Major traditional and contemporary models of family and relationship oriented therapies will be discussed and reviewed and critiqued along with the philosophical basis for the various theoretical orientations. Interns will apply these models to their clinical work with individuals, couples, and families. Systemic approaches to treatment will be taught as they relate to individuals, couples, and families and with regard to conceptualization of provision of care within a tertiary care medical center. Interns will learn the qualitative differences in work with systems vs. individuals. Interns will be expected to observe and then demonstrate assessment, intervention, and consultation to other health care professionals. The impact of trauma exposures and associated mental health sequelae on family members and on relationships, for example, will be one important aspect of the MFT rotation. Interns will also conduct co-therapy with an AAMFT approved supervisor as well as review audio recordings of sessions in supervision. Interns will also be expected to complete regular readings in the major journals relating to marriage and family therapy. Individual intern goals will be negotiated as appropriate.
